Axel Kustner on Sunday
Blues!
 German photographer Axel Kustner has been a great friend to
Music Maker and has taken so many wonderful photos of our artists.
Don’t miss hearing him interviewed this Sunday from 5-7pm on Big Road Blues – a show on
Jazz90.1 that airs out of Rochester, NY.
Axel
has been documenting the blues in the South since the early 70’s through his
field recordings and remarkable photography. For over thirty years he
has helped document the often unseen and unheard rural Southern Blues scene. On
Big Road Blues, Axel will be talking about his travels as well as some of the
artists he has recorded and photographed through the years.

Diggin’:
“Lee Gates”
 It’s fascinating to me how often the generational
divide is brought up when debating matters of taste. Especially given the
shifting nature of the musical landscape and the rapidly widening technological
divide, which simultaneously complicates and facilitates discovery — of new
artists, of new genres, of forgotten history. As a fairly young person who’s
consistently been into “older” forms of music, I was naturally drawn
to Lee Gates’ “Why
Don’t These Young People Understand?” because it promised to speak to that
fascination via good old delta blues.
Trying to explain
the Blues to people is like trying to explain breathing; it’s something
that just happens to you. Gates’ track is a great illustration of all the
descriptors I regularly use: “dirty” (the slide of his fingers on the guitar),
“organic” (you could easily imagine that, if it weren’t a recording, he could
easily take this in many different directions depending on his general mood at
the time of playing it), “soulful” and a little bit melancholy. It’s really
about isolation, and seeking some way to bridge that gap. Hopefully, the
wailing voice of his guitar will do its part the help everybody
understand.

Festival – Artist Profile
The Music Maker Stage at the
Southern Mississippi Roots Festival is next weekend! Music Maker will host
several artists playing from Noon – 4pm on Saturday, October 13th in
Hattiesburg, MS. We’ve given you several artists profiles now, and here
is the final one – The Drew Young Band!
Drew Young of the Drew Young Band is back in
New Orleans by way of New York City, and brings that Cresent City Sound
to the Music Maker Stage. Drew is originally from Atlanta, GA and got
his start in the trenches of nearby Athens, as the founder and front man of the
jangly guitar-driven Ruben Kincaid. Since then, he’s been traversing the
country in a variety of beat up vehicles, stopping along the way to work with
some of the most talented musicians and offbeat characters in “the
biz.” Musical inspirations include The Band, Tom Petty and Neil Young. More at

John Dee Holeman at Richmond
Folk Festival next weekend!
The Richmond Folk Festival, one
of Virginia’s largest and most anticipated events of the year, will feature John
Dee Holeman’s unique Piedmont Blues on Saturday, October 13th from Noon
– 12:45pm, and on Sunday October 14th from 4:15pm – 5:15pm.
The Festival strives to present the very finest traditional
artists from across the nation. We’re excited audiences in Richmond
will get a chance to experience John Dee!
