Gina is more widely known as the lead singer, founder, songwriter, and cigarbox guitar show house of the 2019 International Blues Challenge finalist, Misty Blues. The band has been performing original and traditional blues with hints of jazz, soul, funk, and tent revival gospel since 1999. Gina/Misty Blues have recorded 16 albums with tracks featuring artists like Charles Neville, Eric Gales, Joe Louis Walker, Justin Johnson, and Kat Riggins. They have performed extensively throughout the Northeast and have toured the continental U.S., Canada, and the United Kingdom. Misty Blues has been nominated for a number of Independent Blues Music Awards, and they were bestowed the honor of being the 2021 CFAB Music Realm Entertainer of the Year. Their original music is regularly aired on SiriusXM Bluesville, and they have had broad international airplay, as evidenced by chart standings on the Roots Music Report. In 2024, they had the distinct honor of having a song they released used in a U.S. presidential campaign ad.

The Deep Dive

Gina Coleman’s new release really is different. Opening with Graveyard Dream Blues is gritty and primitive with the starkness of Coleman’s voice, contrasted against the warm acoustic slide work of guitarist, Seth Fleischmann, sparce plucky bass work of Diego Mongue and excellently crafted percussion of Ronan Chris Murphy and drum rhythm of Rob Tatten. Beautiful! Easy shuffle, One Hour Mama, has a soft pace with vocal by Coleman, Fleischmann on guitar, Aaron Dean on clarinet, David Vittone on keys, Mongue on bass and Tatten on drums.

Bama Bound Blues has a really nice feel with Coleman in the spotlight on vocal and featuring Dean on clarinet. I particularly like the easy attack of Mongue on bass and Fleischmann on guitar giving the track a subtle power. Very nice. Another favorite is Fore Day Creep, written by Cox and famously covered in the 70’s by Humble Pie on Rockin’ The Fillmore. A similar track, Outside Woman Blues, was written by Blind Joe Reynolds in 1929 and covered by Cream in the late 60’s. Coleman has a cool laid back vocal style and Dean on clarinet solos over the easy backing of Mongue, Tatten and Fleischmann. Wrapping the release is slow blues, Blues Ain’t Nothing Else But and Coleman grinds down with gritty vocal and Vittone on keys adds a glisten. Murphy and Tatten anchor the bottom and Dean’s clarinet adornment really adds a nice shine. Solid closer.
