Your guide to Music, Gear and Lifestyle...

Joanna Connor is an absolute
powerhouse on the Chicago scene, widely celebrated as the "Queen of
Slide Guitar"
for her fierce, lightning-fast fretwork. Born in
Brooklyn and raised in Massachusetts, she fell in love with music early through
her mom’s killer record collection, picking up the guitar at age seven and
fronting local bands by 16.

Driven to dive
headfirst into real blues culture, she hopped a Greyhound bus to Chicago at age
22. She quickly made a name for herself jamming at legendary South Side spots
like the Checkerboard Lounge and shared stages with icons like Buddy Guy,
Junior Wells, and James Cotton
. After a breakthrough stint with Dion
Payton’s band, she launched her own powerhouse group in 1987 and dropped her
praised debut album, Believe It!, in 1989.

She spent the '90s
touring the world but later scaled back to raise her kids, anchoring the
Chicago scene with legendary, multi-decade residencies at Kingston Mines
and the House of Blues. In 2014, a live video of her tearing it up went
viral, introducing her ferocious style to a new generation. This resurgence led
to her 2021 album, 4801 South Indiana Avenue (produced by Joe
Bonamassa
), which shot straight to No. 1 on the Billboard Blues Chart.
Following that up with Best of Me in 2023, she is still out there
keeping the blues alive and loud.

The Deep Dive

Opening with the Meters, Cissy Strut, giving the band warm up time not unlike a funky James Brown intro. With Dan Souvigny winding out the Hammond, Sean Gotti Calloway laying down the funk on bass line and tight drum work by Jason JRoc Edwards, this band is in the groove. Connor steps up and turns up the heat showing a taste of what she's got and we're underway. Elmore James', The Sky Is Crying gets a real makeover influenced by Dion Payton, a mentor of Connors.  Soulful vocals and complimenting keys and guitar make this track into a real soul scorcher. With volume swells and down low tempo Connor milks every drop of soul from her Les Paul before opening the flood gates and lets the blues fly. This is an explosive track with little resemblance to James or SRV. Excellent!

Little Walter's, You're So Fine breaks with a Chicago style blues mated with a shuffling rocker. An easy swinging Hammond solo by Souvigny, and a blistering slide solo by Connor make this track sail. On Willie Dixon's, I Just Wanna Make Love To You, Connor is full ahead rocking with torching riffs bringing up the first chorus. Calloway and Edwards are pushing the drive and Connor is bringing it down for another Buchanan like volume swell soaked pyrotechnics.Wrapping the release is Kansas Joe McCoy's, When The Levee Breaks of course heavily influenced by Led Zep. Connor hoes her own road on interpretation with dialed back rhythm guitar and powerful vocals over solid drumming by Edwards. Souvigny saturates the track with Hammond and Connor's vocals are raw and gritty. Kicking out the stops she's letting her fingers fly and you can actually envision just ripping the riffs with reckless abandon. This crowd definitely got their money's worth and more!
