Your guide to Music, Gear and Lifestyle...

Based out of Northwest Ohio, Will Schneider is a horn player, composer, and teacher who has been doing cool things with the French horn, pulling it out of the classical world and dropping it straight into modern jazz and avant-garde music. He started out with a classical degree from Central Michigan before heading over to Bowling Green State University, where he pulled off the impressive feat of grabbing dual master’s degrees in both classical performance and jazz studies. When he isn't out teaching or running clinics, you can usually find him gigging around Midwestern jazz spots like BLU Jazz+ with his chordless trio, making music with the Third Shore Collective quintet, or even backing up legends like Johnny Mathis. Will is all about open spaces, rich textures, and real-time musical conversations, blending his serious academic chops with a totally relaxed, intuitive vibe.

The Deep Dive

Convergence opens with Cave of Dreams, an interesting, avant-garde conversation between Will Schneider on horn and Andrew Peck's acoustic bass. A subtle yet soulful melody by Schneider seems to call out of the quiet setting a quiet, anchored by Brad Billmaier and a great pattern on drums. Peck takes a nice stroll on bass adding just the right amount of contrast before wrapping the opener. Very nice. Sea of Stars, is a solid horn melody featured over a drum saga of sorts driving along. Falling back to a more quiet introspectie feel another really nice track. Title track, Convergence, locks the group back into a tight groove, starting with a excellent drum cadence that slips into a rolling 6/8 jazz rhythm. Schneider lays out a great horn led melody with dash accents by Billmaier that I have to confess had my feet moving. Another lively bass solo by Peck gives the track incredible balance making this one of my favorite entries on the release.
Astral Voyage is a cool track mixing melodic lead lines of Schnieder with AJ Shenk on tenor sax.  Shank's approach has a different character than Schneider's and immediately adds a more rounded, warm feel with the sax's rich overtones that lock in with the low end without crowding the trio's open space. Billmaier's drum sense is spot on with a super rhythm pattern and Pecks feel and spirit on bass makes this an excellent track. Wrapping the release is Ways of Knowing with Geoffry Schneider on alto saxophone. With a somber melody and alternating Peck's bass lines with Will on horn and Geoffry's alto work makes for a classically composed yet strong jazz roots making for an innovative and satisfying closer.

On Convergence, the Will Schneider Trio dumps the piano entirely to let a French horn call the shots over a driving rhythm section. The album goes from raw, stripping-it-down dialogues between horn and bass to locked-in 6/8 grooves that get your feet moving, before expanding into multi-horn textures that thicken up the sound without ruining the open space.

Bman's Verdict

Convergence is a sharp, piano-free jazz outing that turns raw horn-and-bass conversations into steady, locked-in grooves that stick with you.
