💿 ALBUM REVIEW:Jane Getter Premonition - Transmogrify

Jane Getter Premonition is the killer progressive-fusion vehicle steered by NYC guitar ace and singer-composer Jane Getter. It’s basically where heavy prog-rock grit crashes headfirst into razor-sharp jazz fusion—zero filler, all teeth. Flanked by an elite crew of monster players like keyboardist Adam Holzman and guitarist Alex Skolnick, Getter has built a reputation for shredding right through traditional genre borders. They’re back at it with Transmogrify, a record that leans hard into raw sonic mutations and heavy, shape-shifting grooves.

The Deep Dive

Opening with Still Dreaming and a stiff drum rhythm by Russell Holzman, Jane Getter on bass and Chanda Rule on lead vocal. With axeman Alex Skolnick on guitar and Adam Holzman on keys this is a strong opener and one ready for radio. Transmogrify, a sprawling progressive track with a jagged rhythm led by Getter and Skolnick and reinforced by Gene Lake on drums and Adam Holzman on keys. I really like this track with it's inventive soloing and moving rhythm line and understated vocals by Getter. He's Gone Away (Won't Stay) is an classic prog track with solid bottom by Lake, keyboard melody by Holzman, Frasier on bass and Getter on vocal and electrifying guitar.

Little Steps is a lighter track with Getter on acoustic guitar showing mature, well thought out lead work. Wrapping the release is Just Run with Getter featured on lead vocal and solid bass lead by Mark Egan. With Adam on keys, Lake on drums and nicely orchestrated electric guitar lead, this is a solid closer for an interesting release.

Watch: Jane Getter Premonition plays Transmogrify

This record jumps right in with an upfront rhythm section and a killer vocal delivery that gives the introduction an immediate, radio-ready edge. The music shifts gears between sprawling progressive numbers packed with jagged tempos and inventive soloing, and more straightforward tracks anchored by heavy keyboard melodies and searing electric guitar work. They shake up the heavy textures with a lighter piece that highlights some mature, well thought out acoustic guitar execution, before nailing the landing with a definitive closer featuring an agile groove and a nicely orchestrated final solo.

Bman's Verdict

Ultimately, it is an engaging and cohesive record that serves as a highly satisfying entry point into the band's latest sonic evolution.
