I have been reading, watching and enjoying the new instructional DVD and accompanying guitar tab from Hal Leonard called Smokin’ Joe Kubek and Dave Rubin. The DVD is closely followed by the very clearly tabbed corresponding riffs. Joe plays the riffs and then you have the opportunity to review the illustration. Joe demonstrates riffs starting with very basic stationary phrases and then also some really cool singular phrases. As the DVD progresses so does the complexity and sophistication of the riffs illustrated.
The DVD is divided into Licks, Riffs, Turnarounds, Rhythm, Slide, and Specific Artists. Some of my favorites of the basic licks are Hendrix Bends and Big Slow Bend. The Reverse Rakes, Collins Chops, Multi Purpose Lick, T-Bone Lick and Horn Phrase require better dexterity but of course are more challenging for the more advanced player.
