Your guide to Music, Gear and Lifestyle...

Katie Knipp is a fiercely independent roots-and-blues powerhouse out of Northern California who plays by her own rules. She commands the stage with a wild mix of operatic vocal range, grit-spitting harmonica, and slide resonator guitar, often steering her band from behind a heavy boogie-woogie piano. She has spent years carving out her own space on the roots circuit, opening for legends like Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughan, and Joan Osborne while quietly landing multiple self-released albums straight into the Billboard Top 10 Blues charts.
What makes her stand out is that dual musical personality: she formally studied opera by day while sneaking into smoky clubs to sing the blues by night. That blend of technical vocal strength and raw, unpolished emotion gives her songwriting a distinct edge. Instead of chasing standard studio perfection, she leans heavily into raw soul, Americana storytelling, and the kind of uninhibited energy that you can only truly capture when the amplifiers are hot and the room is packed.

The Deep Dive

The concert opens with Santa Cruz Blues, a heavy, rock driven blues number with Katie on vocal and harmonica and dirty, gritty guitar work by Chris Martinez. With it's stripped down approach reinforced by simple drum mechanics by Neil Campisano, Pancho Tomaselli on bass and saturated B3 by Steve Utstein Moving this opener makes a clear statement. An easy acoustic style slide, light snare approach on Bullet Train sets up for a more emotional vocal track by Knipp. Building a more rhythmic bottom and adding B3, this track is really a strong vocal showcase for Knipp's style.  Dirty Cables, opens with some real authentic sounding slide work by Martinez, Knipp's vocals leading into a radio style melody.   With bright piano /B3 intro by Utstein, Metro In Paris has "groovy" Euro sound with a strong bass line by Tomaselli. Knipp is really moving with intense B3 and drums holding down the body of the track giving it a smokey club feel.

Blind Willie Johnson's, John the Revelator is my favorite track on the release with a wall of sound then subdued guitar by Martinez and warm B3 by Utstein and lively tom tom work by Campisano. Raw and cool. Sad Eyed Lover, is uptempo and bouncy yet bluesy and gritty. Saturated B3 and guitar trills and distortion create a cool soundscape for Knipp's pop vocals. Chamomile and Cocaine has an almost Joe Cocker/Leon Russell sway. With Utstein reinforcing that thought on piano and B3 and Martinez breaking into a solid blues frenzy on guitar, Knipp lays back watching the power build before giving the track a raw Joplin like wail.  Wrapping the release is Mud, an excellent ballad with a great piano/B3 vamp, giving Knipp a solid wave of blues to ride. A short vamp on piano by Utstein and a brilliant guitar solo builds to a real peak before calming down to a crescendo vocal summary by Knipp. Solid closer.

Katie Knipp's raucous, unpolished vocals take center stage right from the jump, commanding the space over a heavy roots-rock foundation of grit-spitting slide guitar and rich B3 organ. The performances shift from foot-stomping grooves to deep, emotional ballads, serving as a direct vehicle for her to cut loose with pure soul.

Bman's Verdict

A raucous vocal explosion backed by a heavy, unpolished roots-rock engine that forces you to either dive into the full breakdown or miss out on how this performance completely uncoils.
