Your guide to Music, Gear and Lifestyle...

Todd Albright stands out as a premier country blues artist who brings a fresh perspective to the vintage acoustic twelve-string guitar tradition. Operating out of Detroit, Michigan, he is celebrated for keeping the spirit of pre-war fingerstyle blues alive with incredible precision and a deeply soulful presence. His signature sound pulls inspiration from early pioneers like Blind Willie McTell and Mississippi John Hurt, matching complex guitar picking with a raw, timeless vocal delivery. His authentic approach caught the attention of Jack White's Third Man Records, a major milestone that helped introduce his historic sound to a global audience of roots music enthusiasts.
His remarkable talent and deep commitment to the genre take center stage on his latest project. Recorded with a stripped-down, traditional setup, the music serves as a powerful nod to his artistic journey and the lasting spirit of the blues. He travels widely, playing everywhere from small local clubs to large acoustic music festivals, always treating the music with deep respect while making it accessible to modern listeners. Through his constant touring and dedication to classic rags and spirituals, he bridges the gap between old-school American history and the modern music world.

The Deep Dive Recorded in unvarnished mono format using a single ribbon microphone, the production mirrors the raw, humid aesthetics of classic 78 rpm lacquers and I'm thrilled to be listening on vinyl. Producer Charlie Parr chooses not to manipulate the performance with modern studio tricks, allowing the natural resonance of Albright's heavy finger-style guitar work and authentic vocals to carry the project.

Opening with Blind Willie McTells, Drive Away Blues, Albright uses a traditional two string thumb bass line to drive the train with honest vocals, and 12string accompaniment with DAVE Hundrieser on harmonica. Solid opener. Original track, Stockin’ Feet Blues is one of my favorites on the release with a smoother approach on guitar reminding me a bit if Siegel Schwall band. Skin Game Blues is a great original track with understated guitar work smooth slide by Charlie Parr and perfect harmonica balance by Hundrieser. Step It Up and Go is a terrific Blind Boy Fuller piece and Parr and Hundrieser really do. Wow! Another original, If That Woman's Love Was Whiskey, honors Albright's late mentor, Paul Geremia. Played with a slide in an open-D Vestapol tuning, the track features an intricate arrangement that really rocks. Frankie seems a clever adaptation on traditional blues track Stagolee performed by Mississippi John Hurt and Taj Mahal among others. A super track and nicely done.  Wrapping the release is The Fort Worth & Dallas Blues, an almost joyful street-rag that pairs Albright’s steady guitar metronome and happy vocal style with Hundreiser on harmonica for a punchy closer. Nicely done.
